[Geshe Michael Roach] (0:00 - 4:47) So we'll continue with Purifying Bad Seeds. SHING BSKYED PA CHEN LA SGU BA LTA PA SOGS SHING GI SGO NAS PHYIR SONG BA YIN PAS So in many cases we broke our vows, things that we make commitments to. And those are very serious. But sometimes we make a very bad seed, not because of us, but because of the power of the person that we did the action towards. Like Padre Osvaldo, who was here, right? I don't know his life history, but I think I can tell on his face. He worked in some very hard places, and he succeeded. But it cost him a lot of worry. Then he reached a very, to me, it seems like he reached a very good place in his heart. And also, to allow us to do Buddhist fires in his front yard is unusual. So to say, oh, you are stupid to your friend, or to say you are stupid to Padre Osvaldo, the word is the same. But the seed is much worse towards the person that you did the action to. So sometimes we make a mistake, not because of our feeling, but that person is very special and we didn't know or we didn't think about it. CHOS GSUNG BA YIN PAS Therefore, THE RIGS GCIG POR YANG NGAN SOGS GSUM KHAS RGYU'I CHA TZAM RGYAS ZAG ZIN YOD RAS Therefore, it's definite that since the morning, even today, we already collected enough seeds after we died to become a human being. Or to become an animal, or to go to hell, or something like that. DENDRA YIN NA THA DAG CI LTAR BYA SNYAM NA So now what are we supposed to do? DE YANG PHRAG NAS, DE PA GCIG BU MI PHEN PAR It doesn't help to be paralyzed. To say, oh, I'm a bad person. I'm going to go to hell. We're not allowed to be paralyzed. MI PHEN, it doesn't help. ZIN DIR MA ZHIG TSUN CHAGS DANG YID RGYA'I BUM SOGS KYI GOR BA MTHONG MED KYIS SDIG PA BDAG PA'I LTA MA BYUNG BAR ZHANG SDOM LA BAS means from this moment on until the end of our lives, we should try to clean those. Not just the ones from this morning. But GOR BA MTHONG MED means for time with no beginning, we should try to clean those. Then he gives examples. [Geshe Michael Roach] (4:47 - 4:51) We can do prostrations. [Geshe Michael Roach] (4:52 - 5:46) We can recite mantras, special mantras. There are special mantras for purification. We did a lot in the fire last night. We did that one a lot. That's to purify. Then BDAG PA'I LTA MA BYUNG BAR means do something to clean the karma. Until you get BDAG. [Geshe Michael Roach] (5:48 - 5:49) Say BDAG. [Geshe Michael Roach] (5:49 - 6:26) BDAG BDAG means a sign that the bad seed is gone. So BDAG KYANG if you want to know what those signs are, GUL BYED KYI GSUNGS NAS ZHES PA GUL BYED KYI GSUNGS means a special secret book where Buddha asks us to do good things. [Geshe Michael Roach] (6:30 - 6:43) It's quoted by Je Tsongkapa in the great book on the Steps of the Path, Lamrim Chenmo. [Geshe Michael Roach] (6:44 - 7:06) Then he just goes on. He doesn't tell you what the signs are. So I went and got the signs for you. Here's one set of signs, but there's also another set of signs from JIN GANG CHING from Diamond Cutter Sutra. [Geshe Michael Roach] (7:06 - 7:14) And here's a group of signs and there's another group of signs that can be found in Diamond Cutter Sutra. [Geshe Michael Roach] (7:15 - 10:57) Then I was having some talks with friends coming and going. And they said, Oh Geshe La, I have a problem. After the jinsek, after the cleaning our bad seeds fire, the first fire, I had a terrible dream and I am throwing up some bad food. Then I said, Yay! That's the first sign in the book. Okay, so in your dream you will be vomiting some bad food I had without the dream. I'm so drunk. [?] If you are lucky maybe you will throw up or you will dream about throwing up. And it means that bad karma is cleaning out. SHOD DANG OM MA THUNG BA'I Then eating yogurt or drinking milk in the dream. Something which is pure and white. MI SNA PO DANG MA HAD THUG PA You have a fight with a man who is all darkness or or a big bull which is black. And you fight with them and you win. NYIN DAG GZHAN RANG means in the dream you have a very clear vision of the sun or the moon. I think last night, sometimes that can come into your real life also. So I thought last night we had some result of purification. We had such a beautiful night here. In the sky on one of the most important holidays. RGYEN DON GYI DE MTHONG BA In the dream you meet spiritual friends, your spiritual friends, your members of your sangha or other spiritual people. RI DANG GANG ZANG LA RDZAD PA means you are climbing up to the top of a high mountain. Or the top of a very high beautiful building. SRENG RGYAS CI LA SDUG PA means you are sitting on a teaching throne. [Geshe Michael Roach] (10:58 - 10:58) Right? [Geshe Michael Roach] (11:02 - 12:27) Maybe there are some lions holding it up. So those are some typical dreams which are a sign that your bad seeds are you are succeeding to purify your bad seeds. My teacher used to add you are flying in the sky like this. You are not in an airplane. How many people experienced that in a dream? Good, good. He said that's the best one. You are flying in the sky. DE NAS SGO MNGON YAL KHAR DOR SEMS SGO MDE DANG BRAL BA'I YI RGYAS GNOD CIG LAS BDAG BA DANG Before you go to sleep you can do some purification mantra if you want. LTUNG ZHAG GI DGOS NAS KYANG CHAGS SUNG LA BAS TE You can also do what we call LTUNG ZHAG. [Geshe Michael Roach] (12:27 - 12:35) LTUNG ZHAG means a special prayer for purifying bad karma. [Geshe Michael Roach] (12:35 - 13:07) And useful at that time to do full prostration all the way down. SDIG SDUG RNAMS CHUNG NA LUS BZHAG I like this. He says if you make a bubu in the morning and you make some small bad karma in the morning clean it in the evening. [Geshe Michael Roach] (13:09 - 13:14) If you make a bubu in the evening clean it in the morning. [Geshe Michael Roach] (13:16 - 13:43) So you are always cleaning. I don't know why but when I go to my room Rebecca helped me to clean it a few days ago. But if I spend one hour there it will be a mess. Then in the evening I should clean again. [Geshe Michael Roach] (13:46 - 13:58) Then when I wake up again it's a mess. So the mess you make in the morning clean it in the evening. [Geshe Michael Roach] (13:59 - 14:02) Don't hold a bad seed for 24 hours. [Geshe Michael Roach] (14:07 - 14:08) Do something. [Geshe Michael Roach] (14:09 - 14:15) Don't hold it. Don't let it stay inside of you for 24 hours. [Geshe Michael Roach] (14:18 - 14:19) Why? [Geshe Michael Roach] (14:21 - 14:42) Dhamma Rene [?] did the arithmetic yesterday the mathematics about killing the bed bug. He said it's correct. He showed me on the paper now. [Geshe Michael Roach] (14:44 - 14:50) We put it yesterday on the screen. [Geshe Michael Roach] (14:50 - 15:11) Oh well. We'll debate it. Oh, I'm sorry. It's correct. The math is correct. I said it wasn't correct but it was correct. Because mathematics in Tibetan scripture is always wrong. [Geshe Michael Roach] (15:18 - 15:20) But that's not true. [Geshe Michael Roach] (15:22 - 15:35) NYAM LEN GZHAN MANG PO MA CHUNG YANG DI GCIG POR BAS NA'ANG DE TSEM If you don't have a lot of time to do your spiritual practices at least do this one. [Geshe Michael Roach] (15:35 - 15:39) If you don't have a lot of time to do your spiritual practices at least do this one. [Geshe Michael Roach] (15:42 - 16:27) But he said that about every practice. Okay, well okay. DE NA TSUL DI DANG PHYI MA'I SDUG BSNGAL THAMS CAD KYI BYUNG KHUNG SDIG PA DI SHAG THUB NA SDUG BSNGAL SRED ZHIG NYAM THOB RANG GI CHUNG So all the problems you have in your life and problems from your last life and from your past life they all come from making some mistake towards another person. Every problem we have in our life comes from hurting somebody else. [Geshe Michael Roach] (16:33 - 16:48) So if we can learn how to clean those seeds you just become completely happy and you don't have problems. [Geshe Michael Roach] (16:51 - 17:57) My lama was teaching me all the time. I spent 25 years in the same house. He didn't tell me one time I did a good thing. He was always complaining about me. Always giving me too many jobs. One day he said the roof is leaking. There was one small drop there. Then you go up, you fix it. Then it was the coldest day of the year. I think like 5, 10 degrees. Not as cold as Harbin. But it's like 10 degrees below zero or something. Harbin is 15. [Geshe Michael Roach] (17:58 - 18:02) How many centigrade? [Geshe Michael Roach] (18:03 - 18:10) Jasmine, how many centigrade? Harbin. Stanley, how much? [Geshe Michael Roach] (18:13 - 18:16) Minus 25 centigrade. [Geshe Michael Roach] (18:21 - 20:06) So he will send me up to take care of that. You go up and fix it. Then I have tar, black paint. Then I have to go back there 10 times on this roof, on the high roof. It's frozen. The tar is frozen. It will spread. If you didn't fix a roof [?] you have to understand something. If the water is dripping here the hole can be over there. It will travel under the roof. So you have to go on the roof and patch, patch, patch, patch, patch, patch. Then sometimes you will find the real hole. Then all the holes, all the leaking finished everywhere in the whole house. But you have to turn off the real source. Our whole life we are trying to be happy. We want to be successful. Nobody likes to have problems. [Geshe Michael Roach] (20:07 - 20:08) Sickness. [Geshe Michael Roach] (20:08 - 20:10) Boyfriend problem. [Geshe Michael Roach] (20:12 - 20:18) Money problem. Work problem. Family problem. [Geshe Michael Roach] (20:19 - 20:21) Inside our own mind and mind. [?] [Geshe Michael Roach] (20:22 - 20:27) Nobody wants it. But the source is only one. [Geshe Michael Roach] (20:27 - 20:29) What you do to other people. [Geshe Michael Roach] (20:30 - 20:35) So shut it. Turn off the water at the source. [Geshe Michael Roach] (20:38 - 21:22) Then all the problems finish. We are so used to problems that we cannot imagine what it's like not to have any problems. I heard some stupid people. I think they are stupid. If you don't have problems you can't appreciate the time you don't have problems. Then I said bullshit. To have no problem is fine. [Geshe Michael Roach] (21:25 - 21:27) That's not a problem. [Geshe Michael Roach] (21:30 - 21:57) I don't need a problem to understand happiness. I just be happy. I believe that. And I don't believe that other story. I think that story was invented by people who don't know how to take out the bad seeds. Oh, if we don't have sadness you can't know happiness. [Geshe Michael Roach] (21:57 - 22:00) Oh, if you don't know sadness you can't know happiness. [Geshe Michael Roach] (22:01 - 23:42) Then you can keep my extra sadness. It's really not true. If things are coming from karma then happiness is not relative. And you can be completely happy. Without unhappiness to compare it to. So anyway, and then if you shut off the seeds, the bad seeds nyam tok nang gi chung So those of you who are studying Tibetan nang gi, nang gi If you have a sore throat you can try to say nang gi nang gi nang gi The tongue doesn't do anything. It's not na, na, na nang gi I remember in I was learning Tibetan nang gi means automatically you will have realizations. Everybody wants to have mystical experiences. They want to fly in the sky. They want to see all the angels talk to them. How to make it happen? [Geshe Michael Roach] (23:43 - 23:46) Clean your bad karma. [Geshe Michael Roach] (23:46 - 26:10) Then those things will happen automatically. You don't have to do anything else. That's why this is number three. If you want to have good meditation but you don't clean your bad seeds first you can meditate for 100 years nothing will happen. Except maybe you will get sore knees. Really. Many people told me oh Geshe La, I try to meditate for three years now. Nothing happened. I didn't see any angel. I didn't fly. Did you do step number three? I didn't have time. I want to meditate. It's like I want to go to Tequila from Guadalajara in my car but I didn't have time to put gas in the car. tsen du nga tsa chung wa sok gi tse In this life when you get sick or something you get some sickness suddenly nga tsa nyong chik gi gyu mi gyewa sak simpa yinpe That means you already have a bad seed. rim do chepa sok gi tsen tap sum penpar char med ching It's too late to fix those seeds in that moment. If you let the bad seed stay inside of you and it my teacher said when the tree starts to grow from the seed only a stupid person will try to push the tree back into the ground before the tree starts to grow. It's easy. [Geshe Michael Roach] (26:10 - 26:21) Pick the seed, throw it out. After you have a problem then it's very difficult to change that seed. [Geshe Michael Roach] (26:22 - 26:58) tsen tap sum penpar char rim do chepe de bu chi ne mok su minpa on Because whatever you do today to fix that sickness it will only help you the next day. If you stop if you stop the bad seeds after they start to grow it will stop after a few days or a few months but not immediately. [Geshe Michael Roach] (26:59 - 27:04) So stop them before they start to grow. [Geshe Michael Roach] (27:05 - 27:33) de na de mi penpa sok lok lok ta yang mi che So don't get a wrong idea about your bad seeds. Oh Geshe La I got cancer. Then this morning I did the four powers but I went to the doctor in the afternoon he said I still have cancer. [Geshe Michael Roach] (27:38 - 27:41) So I don't believe in your four powers. [Geshe Michael Roach] (27:42 - 27:47) That's like I tried to put the tree in the ground but nothing, it won't go Geshe La. [Geshe Michael Roach] (27:54 - 28:30) Before you have a problem take care of the seeds. If you get a problem act quickly before the seed grows too much. If the seed has grown a lot and you have a serious problem don't think the four powers don't work. Use them but it will take some time because it already grew. [Geshe Michael Roach] (28:31 - 29:51) Okay pe na shing la sem me dre bu druk sin ne de dok tab su ne torwa dang dra If you have a field, agricultural field and you already grew a whole crop of soy beans and you don't want them can you just go throw barley seeds in the field? You can but it will take another season. The soy bean is not going to disappear on the first day. de par dre bu druk sinpa na chi chal che me pe After the tree has already grown it's too late. de man yong go na sabun chungpa tar dipay shab pa ja You should destroy the seeds before they grow. Does it work to make a good seed to stop a bad seed? [Geshe Michael Roach] (29:52 - 29:58) Does it work to plant a good seed to eliminate a bad seed? [Geshe Michael Roach] (29:58 - 30:54) It does work but it takes time and it's the only thing you can do after the problem already came. My husband called me from work. He said tonight he has to work late. Then his voice sounded a little bit strange to me. Then when I hung up the phone immediately some doubt came inside of me. Is he really working tonight or not? Then immediately you should do the four powers. I went to the doctor they said take what do you call it? Biopsy. [Geshe Michael Roach] (30:58 - 31:12) They said they will call me next week with the result. Then you have to work really hard before next week to change a seed. [Geshe Michael Roach] (31:14 - 31:25) So when you see a problem, start starting, just starting cut the seed. [Geshe Michael Roach] (31:25 - 31:27) Don't wait for a week. [Geshe Michael Roach] (31:28 - 31:29) Cut the seed immediately. [Geshe Michael Roach] (31:31 - 31:35) There's four steps to cutting the seed. [Geshe Michael Roach] (31:35 - 33:40) I hope he gets to it quickly. SHAGS PA CHE NA SDIG BYUNG BA RNAMS RTZA BA NAS BDAG If you do a good purification small seeds will die completely. Big ones you can make them almost nothing. If you do a good four powers NGAN SONG MYONG NAS RNAMS then you have a karma to go to hell after you die. It will, if you do the four powers it will just become one very bad day of diarrhea or something like that. I think I purified three trips to the hell. Then this many of you heard from Jin Gang Jing Diamond Cutter Sutra. In China it's called Jin Gang Jing. Diamond Cutter Sutra. Very famous in China. The oldest printed book in the world with a date is the Jin Gang Jing. From China. It's from a special cave, some big caves there called Dunhuang. We should go there together. [Geshe Michael Roach] (33:45 - 34:18) Sometime. In that book it says if you use the four powers to clean the negative seeds if you are supposed to have a car accident and die you will just have a very bad headache for one or two days. [Geshe Michael Roach] (34:20 - 34:33) We'll talk more about it later. Then the lama asked a question. Is there any good thing about a bad karmic seed? [Geshe Michael Roach] (34:39 - 34:40) What? [Geshe Michael Roach] (34:44 - 34:46) That's not so great. [Geshe Michael Roach] (34:50 - 34:54) Try again. Say it? [Geshe Michael Roach] (34:57 - 35:06) Oh yeah, you can say that. Yeah, which means they are cleanable. [Geshe Michael Roach] (35:07 - 35:08) They are cleanable. [Geshe Michael Roach] (35:14 - 35:20) That's the only good thing about a bad karma. It's not permanent. [Geshe Michael Roach] (35:22 - 35:26) You can remove it if you know the system. [Geshe Michael Roach] (35:30 - 37:41) DIG PA DAG CHE CHUNG NI ZHAG PA'I SAMS SBYOR DRAG BZHIN GYIS YIN PAS Whether or not the seed is destroyed depends mainly on your mind. Therefore we should have RGYUD DONG SOGS ZHUGS DRAG PO CHAD DGOS RGYUD means RGYUD DONG are two important words for purification. And if he doesn't get to the four powers this afternoon, I will do it tonight anyway. Night time is a good time to do it. So RGYUD say RGYUD DONG RGYUD DONG Two important states of mind during purification. I have a good example for RGYUD. So of course my teacher, I told you, he told me you are American, you can fix anything. Then I told you he had a Volkswagen, right? Bochito. 300,000 miles. And we didn't have any money. So one day, this is another fix the car story. He said you have to fix something about the spark plugs or something. Then I changed the spark plugs. Then I thought it's my lama's car. [Geshe Michael Roach] (37:44 - 37:47) I should fix it. [Geshe Michael Roach] (37:48 - 37:49) Strong. [Geshe Michael Roach] (37:50 - 37:50) Fuerte. [Geshe Michael Roach] (37:51 - 38:04) Then I took the wrench. Then all the metal came. Then I called my friend. [Geshe Michael Roach] (38:08 - 38:10) Something strange happened in the car. [Geshe Michael Roach] (38:10 - 38:17) What happened? There's a big hole. He said, do you have a Volkswagen? [Geshe Michael Roach] (38:19 - 38:20) How do you know? [Geshe Michael Roach] (38:22 - 38:58) They don't have a water system. The engine block is aluminum. And it's very soft. And you just destroyed the engine. Just one, just one moment like that. And I feel so bad. This is my lama's car. And it's ruined. In one second. [Geshe Michael Roach] (38:59 - 39:07) That's gyu. I made a big mistake. [Geshe Michael Roach] (39:07 - 39:12) Small mistake. But I made a big mistake. [Geshe Michael Roach] (39:13 - 39:17) It took one second. And that's gyu. [Geshe Michael Roach] (39:19 - 39:33) Then he's going to give a good example later. dom means in the future. I will try not to do it again. So that's gyu dom. [Geshe Michael Roach] (39:33 - 39:34) That's gyu dom. [Geshe Michael Roach] (39:35 - 40:21) shuk drapa ja go You need strong. Those two things have to be strong. I want to get rid of this seed. And I won't do it again. di ni che che pa gare tsendir min du pa du min marwa yin mur de pa kyewa chi ma nyong gyur kyi me ngenpa nam tsendir mirpa yinpe shintu mer di ni che che pa gare tsendir min du pa du min marwa yin mur Okay, this is important. You see many spiritual people. They have good meditation. [Geshe Michael Roach] (40:22 - 40:24) They are helping many people. [Geshe Michael Roach] (40:25 - 43:26) Then some terrible problem comes to them. Then we start to lose faith about the path. Oh, I didn't do meditation. I didn't go to help in Casa Huichol. And I'm fine. And all those guys who went there, they all have some big problem. He said, those people who go to help in Casa Huichol, or they help old people, something like that, and then suddenly they have a lot of problems. They are cleaning, obviously they are cleaning their bad karma. Shintu lek. Shintu lek means fantastical. Those problems are great. How much bad karma they clean. He said, don't get all, don't freak out. You see some people, they are doing their practice. Their car is breaking, their computer is breaking. You should say, good job. Okay. LOM CHOS GZHOR DGOS MANG PO CHUNG BA'ANG. He even says, their things are breaking all the time. Their car is breaking, computer is breaking. They are cleaning the special karma to become a ghost. [?] So, you should be happy when your computer breaks or your car breaks. I think Rebecca's doing very good on this one. Every car she touches, it breaks immediately. I think she has very good four powers. I had a talk today with somebody, and they asked me a very good question. So, how do I know when something bad happens? Is it just a plain bad karma, or am I purifying something? We'll talk about it. [Geshe Michael Roach] (43:26 - 43:30) If he doesn't talk about it, I will talk about it tonight. [Geshe Michael Roach] (43:31 - 43:55) DIG PA BYAS PA GZHAG GCIG TSE RIGS MA SOG RE GZHIG LAM BRAL CHE BA THAMS MA DBAN NI And we also see the opposite happen. And this question comes up a lot in DCI tour [?], for example, in China or Singapore. Ukraine. [Geshe Michael Roach] (43:57 - 44:02) Intelligent people, they will ask the same question. [Geshe Michael Roach] (44:03 - 44:27) In Ukraine, for example. Oh, these guys, they pay bribe to the government, or these other guys, they are not honest businessmen, but they are the pang mao, fat cat. Pang mao? Pang mao. [Geshe Michael Roach] (44:28 - 44:45) They are the successful business people who are cheating the most. If karma is correct, why is this? [Geshe Michael Roach] (44:45 - 45:32) The success which they are having now is coming from old good karma. It's not coming from cheating people, or giving bribes to the government. The success is coming from old good karma. The bad karma is not the cause of the success, but something will happen later, here, and they will have a problem later. So, here is where he talks about it. [Geshe Michael Roach] (45:32 - 45:32) Here. [Geshe Michael Roach] (45:34 - 45:37) In the Bible they say, why do the wicked prosper? [Geshe Michael Roach] (45:40 - 45:44) And that's the Buddhist answer. [Geshe Michael Roach] (45:44 - 45:50) They must have done something good. [Geshe Michael Roach] (45:54 - 46:06) They did something good before, but what they are doing now, it will cause a lot of problems in the future. [Geshe Michael Roach] (46:06 - 47:38) So, don't get confused. Okay. TSE SNGON MED DGE BA'I BRAL BU'I LHAG MA RGYUR PA NAM ZAD, DE DAG SNGA GNOR DU MIN NAS So, they are just getting some premature results. No, how do you say? They are getting some delayed results from their past life good karma. And what they are doing now, like cheating, bribing the government, or corruption, it will cause them a lot of suffering later. For example, he says, be careful. There was a lama called Dromtönje. He was one of the most famous early hippie lamas in Tibet. He was Atisha's main assistant. And by the way, he never became a monk. He was not a monk. KUD TSE MED DU, those of you who are learning Tibetan, what does MED mean? SMAD. [Geshe Michael Roach] (47:39 - 47:42) S-M-A-D. [Geshe Michael Roach] (47:44 - 49:02) Yeah, lower. Like Sera Mey. Sera Mey. In time, when you say TSE MED, it means in the latter part of his life, in the later part of his life. He got ZAD. ZAD means leprosy. Where the fingers fall off and he got leprosy. DE LA SLOB DANG MI BYAS PAR You shouldn't think that he was having some kind of problem. He was happy that he got leprosy, because he's burning old bad karma. So people asked him, are you upset you got leprosy? And he was always like, let's have a party, I got leprosy. I'm so happy. I'm burning all this bad karma. We'll stop there. By the way, it says TSUL BSTAN PA. [Geshe Michael Roach] (49:02 - 49:07) Those of you who are learning Tibetan, it says TSUL BSTAN PA. [Geshe Michael Roach] (49:08 - 49:14) What is TSUL BSTAN PA? TSUL means phang pha. Phang pha? [Geshe Michael Roach] (49:15 - 49:17) Phang pha. Phang pha. [Geshe Michael Roach] (49:19 - 49:57) Method. Method. BSTAN PA means just showing. He's just showing method. It means he's pretending. He didn't really have leprosy. He didn't have the karma to have even leprosy. But he pretended to have leprosy. So people will ask him, why do you have leprosy? Then he'll say, I'm so happy, I'm getting rid of my bad karma. Okay, we'll stop there. [Geshe Michael Roach] (49:57 - 49:58) We'll stop there.
