What are Boundary Markers?

In the Tibetan lineage when you do a retreat you make what are called Boundary or
Protection Markers. We place these markers facing outward to let those outside of our
boundary know that they shouldn't cross over and enter the space that we are using
during retreat.

Before your retreat you make four markers. These markers can be placed on the 4 outer
walls of your house, or you can place just one on your front door. If you are using a
larger space you place them outside pointing in the 4 cardinal directions (north, south
east and west).

When you connect them together in your mind they make a wall around you. This wall
keeps in all the amazing realizations that you have inside, in your heart, and keeps out
any harmful energy which is out in the world from hurting you.

Each marker is made with 3 pieces of grass which represents the kusha grass which
Lord Buddha sat on when he got enlightened. You can use just wild grass growing
around as Lord Buddha did, or if available kusha grass*, which you can purchase from
an Indian store or online. The kusha grass comes as a broom. This is said to be the grass
which The Buddha sat on when he got enlightened. The grass is wrapped in paper. We
write Om, Ah, Hum on the front of the marker, which corresponds to an Enlightened
Being's body, speech and mind. The thing which we are trying to attain.

                                                Fueling your Compassion for Impactful
                                                                     Transformation.

At the end or retreat it is very important to remove the markers so that the beings whom
we can't see, and who live there, can come back to their home. If you are a collector, you
can keep your markers from retreat to retreat, if not, burn them after you have
completed your retreat.
