[] Host: There are resunions that can only happen when the causes and conditions of many lifetimes finally come together. Dear Geshe-la, for us, one of the greatest blessings is to be your students, to immerse ourselves in the boundless ocean of your love and to be guided by you along the path of wisdom and compassion, through this song we offer our most heartfelt prayer to you, Geshe-la. May each of us, in this very lifetime and in all lifetimes to come, always remain like pure lotus flowers, blooming in the world, spreading the fragrance of love, wisdom and gratitude to all beings. Now, with this aspiration in our hearts, every one of you, please join us in this special performance so that together we may raise our voice as one in this prayer and offer it to our beloved teacher, Geshe-la. Let's warmly welcome Geshe-la and the team. Emily, is Emily here? Roxanna (translator): Two more microphones, yeah. Host: Hello, hello. From the audience: Good. Geshe Michael Roach: Okay, good morning. Everywhere in the world where we go, we still do our weekly translator class. And I'll tell you a little bit about the book that Tim is working on. I think most of you know the story about Asanga and the dog. So, one famous Buddhist teacher, almost 2,000 years ago, he did a long retreat. His goal is to meet the future Buddha, Buddha number four in this world. That Buddha's name is Maitreya. And he spent 12 years trying to meet Maitreya and couldn't meet him. Roxanna (translator): He was in retreat for 12 years. Geshe Michael Roach: Then he got upset, he got discouraged, he quit. And he walked back to the town. Some people say he went to buy a beer. Some people say he went to buy Taiwanese bubble tea. But anyway, on the way to town, he saw a dog that got hurt by a wagon. Roxanna (translator): And it's a long story, but he tried to help the dog. Geshe Michael Roach: And then it turns out the dog was really Maitreya. And Maitreya took him to Maitreya's heaven where Maitreya is the Gyaltsab. Roxanna (translator): Gyaltsab means he's the Buddha-in-waiting. Geshe Michael Roach: Maitreya basically taught him five famous books. And then Asanga came home, and I think like a hundred years had passed during the few days. So those, we call them jang chik denga, very famous five books of Maitreya. In the Geshe course, Geshe course is 25 years. The first 12 years is spent on one book of Maitreya. And the commentary is, I think in English it would be about, I don't know, almost 10,000 pages. And Tim is translating that one. Roxanna (translator): Okay, alright. Geshe Michael Roach: So, and he has some, every translator at the beginning of class will give us a homework from the last class. From the audience: Please go ahead. Roxanna (translator): There we go. Tim Lowenhaupt: Sorry, my throat was stuck. So, where we are in the text, as Geshe-la had mentioned, is that we're trying to understand who Maitreya is. Who is he really? And so, in this debate, we're trying to decide, is Maitreya already totally enlightened, or is he merely a bodhisattva? So, in the end of the last class, we had started another debate. Someone's coming along and saying, hey, Maitreya is already totally enlightened. And then he gives a reason why. What was that reason, if anyone remembers? Just loud. I'll repeat you real fast. Yes, Roxanna got it. From the audience: Because the author of the higher line is the same author, and he was already enlightened, so he must be enlightened. Tim Lowenhaupt: You're about two debates ago, but that's correct, but for two debates ago. Do we have any of the translators online? Geshe Michael Roach: When we meditate, everyone's making noise. When we ask the translator question, it's completely quiet. Tim Lowenhaupt: I'll say it in the ancient language, and maybe you can translate it, Roxanna. Why is he already enlightened? From the audience: Why is he already enlightened? Because he's the conqueror. Tim Lowenhaupt: Nice. Someone just comes along and says, he's enlightened. Why is he enlightened? Because he's the conqueror. Because he is the invincible , Because this evidence may not be enough, so later he made more arguments So he gave two more reasons There are two ways we can prove things Roxanna , ? From the audience: Roxanna is still holding the microphone to answer, what is one of the methods? Tim Lowenhaupt: , One is logical verification, and the other is arguments in the text , ? 50% 50% possibility that you are right, which one is it? 50% Which method does the Ka-chi employ here to prove that he is the conqueror? From the audience: This is logical verification Tim Lowenhaupt: , He gives two reasons, and those reasons are quite specific So instead of asking an entire room of people who weren't in the class, I'm just going to remind you of that so we'll get started with the class In one scriptural reference, we learned that Maitreya conquered what was not yet conquered From the audience: Which is one of the definitions of a Buddha Tim Lowenhaupt: In another commentary, they say that Maitreya possessed eyes from which nothing was hidden from his sight From the audience: , Which means he sees all things directly, and not through logic Tim Lowenhaupt: There's nothing hidden from the eyes of a Buddha So from these two commentaries, this is what our debater is saying this is the reason why he's a Buddha From the audience: , , And then our debater is not done yet Tim Lowenhaupt: Probably because he's sweating a little bit He's like I have to keep proving myself And then he continues on And so that's where we start in the text I'll put this in for you Here, right? Geshe Michael Roach: , Good, I can see Tim Lowenhaupt: , OK, cool, yes Geshe Michael Roach: , OK, we're going to start from By the way You don't have to understand anything today This is very advanced Roxanna (translator): Because this is very advanced Geshe Michael Roach: We are not trying to understand We are trying to plant new seeds And those seeds will grow in 5 years or 10 years 5 10 So just relax Roxanna (translator): Don't struggle Understand what you understand Open your mind We will plant seeds in your mind Geshe Michael Roach: Suddenly in a year or two years you go, wow, I understand Roxanna (translator): , , Say, wow, I understand These books are not romance novels Geshe Michael Roach: You cannot understand them the first time you read it Roxanna (translator): But if you don't read it, you will never understand Geshe Michael Roach: So just open your heart Roxanna (translator): We will plant many seeds Then go have a nice lunch Geshe Michael Roach: That's fine, that's how this class works Roxanna (translator): The whole course is run in this way Geshe Michael Roach: Okay, Tim, please read this first sentence Tim Lowenhaupt: We will plant many seeds Then you will never understand Then you will never understand These books are not romance novels But if you don't read them, you will never understand I should have slowed down From the audience: I should have read it slower Okay, finished? Tim Lowenhaupt: Yes Okay, good khenpa sum (?) khenpa sum ? What is khenpa sum?The three knowledges Geshe Michael Roach: Three kinds of wisdom shi shen, lam shen, nam khen Tim Lowenhaupt: The knowledge of all things Geshe Michael Roach: It's basically emptiness seen by three different kinds of people Roxanna (translator): These three knowledges basically mean emptiness seen by three different kinds of people This school is lower middle way They believe emptiness can be divided into three levels Then seeing the emptiness of these three different versions will correspond to three different states of consciousness Geshe Michael Roach: These three states of knowledge Tim Lowenhaupt: Is that from the mother sutra? Roxanna (translator): Yes First you should have depa We should have faith That faith is called tangwa (?) Say tangwa Tangwa means clear water Tangwa means pure water So this pure water in the ancient books means faith ? From the audience: So this is the first of the three types of wisdom? Roxanna (translator): Yes Wow I would like to get it Wow I would like to get it I would like to get this kind of teacher And that leads to a second state of mind That leads to This will lead you to the second state of mind A desire to reach your own goals I want that I want that ? Geshe Michael Roach: What do you want?Basically three knowledges of emptiness Roxanna (translator): First you think they are beautiful And then you get hungry for them Geshe Michael Roach: That's called dunyakidunpa (?) From the audience: ter and sam Then you want to ter and sam Tim Lowenhaupt: You want to study Well, listen and reflect on it Geshe Michael Roach: You want to get some teaching on it And then you want to go home and meditate on those things Roxanna (translator): Then what Tim just said is that the teacher also agrees You want to listen to a professor like this and then go home to think Geshe Michael Roach: ? What's the process? What's the process? It would be beautiful if I could reach that emptiness perception I really want that So I will practice what I need to practice to get it Three steps Here he calls it lam rim These are the steps Step by step ?Jetson? ?Jetson? Roxanna (translator): , , Maitreya is sometimes called by a nickname, which means Super Holy Guy And he already saw these three levels with his nyam shak (?), with his balanced meditation, deep meditation, super deep meditation. Geshe Michael Roach: He saw, he experienced those three stages already. The implication is he's already a Buddha. Buddha. Roxanna (translator): No, he must be already a Buddha. Our debater is quoting some book. Geshe Michael Roach: Look, Maitreya went through all those levels. He didn't say Maitreya is a Buddha, but imply he's a Buddha. So, the debate here, and it's a very, very famous debate in the first twelve years of the Geshe course. And when you get close to Geshe, twenty-two years, if they think you are good enough to try to take the Geshe exam, they will give you a pre-Geshe debate. If you pass it, you can take the Geshe exam. If you don't pass it, you have a direct perception of washing dishes in the monastery kitchen for the rest of your life. Then the debate master will give each candidate a tiny slip of paper, and it has their debate assignment for the pre-Geshe exam. And this was mine. The subject is called jang chung, the book of Maitreya. That's the paper I got to qualify to take the Geshe exam. Roxanna (translator): So, there's a debate. Geshe Michael Roach: Some people say Maitreya is future Buddha. Some people say, no, he's a Buddha, but he's waiting behind the curtain. He's already in a Buddha paradise. Roxanna (translator): He just didn't come here yet. Geshe Michael Roach: And in the Geshe course, twenty-five years, this is the single topic which is tantric. And it's a big honor to get that assignment. Is this guy a Buddha or not already? Was your mom a Buddha already? Was your father a Buddha already? Is your brother a sister already? Roxanna (translator): Is your dog already a Buddha? The secrets are in this debate. Geshe Michael Roach: So, it's wonderful that we can study it together. I'm going to ask Tim to read one more sentence. Tim Lowenhaupt: I'm going to ask Tim to read one more sentence. DOG PA ZHUGS LA PHAN PAR GSUNGS PA'I PHYIR ZER NA (?) Good. Geshe Michael Roach: Okay, good. This manuscript, we don't have a good copy. It's thousands of pages. The copy that I used in the monastery was handwritten by a monk who memorized it. We found one copy in St. Petersburg Library. And we tried really hard to get a copy. And Vika Makarova did a lot of good work. Where are you? Roxanna (translator): She's there. Geshe Michael Roach: And because of her work, we got a real copy. It took John Brady and me, it took us 37 years to get this copy. Roxanna (translator): Now we have it. Geshe Michael Roach: Thank you, Vika. Okay. So, when you see the question marks, it means the copy was corrupt before. And we are fixing it. Okay, so, basically this says faith in enlightenment, and then aspiration to get that enlightenment, and then get it. BYAS GSUNGS KYI THUG RGYUD LA BRTZONG (?) These three steps have already been born. BRTZONG means born in the heart of Maitreya. So, the implication is he's already a Buddha because he's been through those three steps. SDOG PA (?), the word SDOG PA is here, L-D-O-G at the end of the line. It's a very difficult logic idea. When you see the pot on the stove, you see it by cancelling everything which is not the pot on the stove. And that's the difference between CI and PHYIR DAG (?). Roxanna (translator): Then there's the real pot on the stove. There's the ideal picture of a pot on the stove in your mind. And then there's the real pot on the stove. Geshe Michael Roach: The picture of the pot on the stove is the opposite of everything in the universe which is not the pot on the stove. Roxanna (translator): And this sentence says, this dude named Maitreya, he already reached everything which is the opposite of not enlightened. Therefore, he must be Buddha already. Now, question for you. In the Boroboromido (?) Sutra, is this correct statement or wrong statement? Yeah, correct. No. Correct, not correct. Yeah. Geshe Michael Roach: Why? Why? Yeah, it's not tantra. Roxanna (translator): It's an open teaching. In the open teaching, he didn't reach Buddhahood yet. So, we are debating this guy. No, he didn't reach the end of the path. His name is Future Buddha. Maitreya is Future Buddha. Alright. Geshe Michael Roach: By the way, it's very important. Roxanna (translator): Was your mom a Buddha? Geshe Michael Roach: When she gave you birth or when she was feeding you and you were a kid, was she a Buddha? How do you decide if she was a Buddha if you are not a Buddha? Yeah. That's the meaning of this debate. Now, Tim gets to choose the next reader. Tim Lowenhaupt: Rob, can you pass that to Lindsay? From the audience: I lost it. The words are gone. Geshe Michael Roach: BYANG CHUB SEMS PA YIN PAS BYAS (?) BYANG CHUB SEMS PA YIN PAS BYAS Okay, come on. Then you have to look disgusted. So, Geng got it right. I think he does it with his wife. Okay. Tim Lowenhaupt: Geng Tsongpa Po The author of The Jewel of Realization? Geshe Michael Roach: Yeah, the author of this book, which is called The Jewel of Liberation, I think. I don't get it. Roxanna (translator): Jewel of Realization. Yeah. Geshe Michael Roach: In Phanwan Abhisamaya Alankara. Okay. That author is Jesu. From the audience: Lord Maitreya. Geshe Michael Roach: Yeah, it means Lord, but it doesn't necessarily mean Buddha. Roxanna (translator): It means he's born? Geshe Michael Roach: Lord. Roxanna (translator): But not necessarily Buddha. Jetsun Rangdawa (?). Yeah, his name, he means Lord Rangdawa, but this Lord doesn't necessarily mean Buddha. Geshe Michael Roach: Then we say to that guy, CHUNG LDAN DE MA YIN PA SA (?) Are you really saying that he's the conqueror? Tim Lowenhaupt: Are you saying he's not the conqueror? Geshe Michael Roach: This is a declarative statement. Tim Lowenhaupt: He's not the conqueror? From the audience: Yeah, he is not the conqueror. Roxanna (translator): He is not a Buddha. Geshe Michael Roach: Maitreya is not a Buddha yet. Duh, he's future Buddha. From the audience: MA YIN PA DA (?) Because he's Chanchusenpa (?). Because he's a bodhisattva. Now, is it true that if you are a Buddha, you cannot be a bodhisattva? Roxanna (translator): No, every Buddha is a bodhisattva. Geshe Michael Roach: But here we said, he's not a Buddha, he's a bodhisattva. It means he's a bodhisattva who is not yet enlightened. There's two kinds of bodhisattvas. Buddha is a bodhisattva who already became enlightened. Geshe Michael is a bodhisattva who is not enlightened. Understand? But in this case, no, he's not a Buddha yet, because he's still a baby bodhisattva. Then the debater says, I don't know if that's true. Tim Lowenhaupt: Where's Tin? Tin. Tin, Tin. He's way over there. Does someone want to run a microphone over to him? Or do you want to run ... How about you run over here? Yeah. Run, run. Can we get someone in the room with microphones to run them, please? Geshe Michael Roach: Hey, we need a microphone for him. Okay, sit next to Nancy. If he makes a mistake, Nancy, just tell. So, when you say in Chinese, Boroboromito (?), it has many, many meanings. One meaning is all the teachings which Buddha gave on the Perfection of Wisdom. And those books are normally named by how many lines they have. There's a hundred thousand lines, called BUM. Twenty thousand lines. Roxanna (translator): Called GNYIS SPYI (?). Geshe Michael Roach: Eighteen thousand lines. Called STONG (?). Roxanna (translator): SPYI. Geshe Michael Roach: There's also a very famous eight thousand line, which is Ashtasahasvika. Ashtasahasvika. The eight thousand lines. Now, for a hundred dollars, there's a special medicine wake everybody up. It's called a hundred dollars. Okay, here we go. There is a seventy verses. Roxanna (translator): Okay, there's a hundred thousand. Twenty five thousand. Twenty thousand. Eighteen thousand. Eight thousand. Geshe Michael Roach: John Brady finished all of them, God bless you. Roxanna (translator): But there's a seventy verses. What's the other name of that one? From the audience: Alright, try again. Geshe Michael Roach: Yeah, the short name of the diamond cutter. So here he's quoting ... This happens to be the eighteen thousand. When you see the bold letters under the not bold letters, it means there's a quotation in the translation, and we went to John Brady's database, and we searched a hundred thousand pages, and we found it. I used to search the physical book for these quotations. Sometimes I will spend two weeks to find one quotation. This quotation we found in three seconds. In a hundred thousand pages. Okay, Tim, who's going to translate it? Tim Lowenhaupt: I'm trying. Okay, DO In a sutra. Geshe Michael Roach: Yeah, DO means sutra. They didn't tell you which sutra, but I can tell you we used John's database. It's right. This THOG PA (?), Tim, is a very difficult word here. In the first line. THOG usually means to hit something. And if your wisdom is so powerful, nothing can THOG it. I call it hot knife to your body. We can call you THOG MED (?). Roxanna (translator): Which means, in Sanskrit, Asanga Asanga Asanga Nobody can stop his wisdom. Usually THOG PA means stop. But in this case, it's a special idiom. Geshe Michael Roach: And I'll test Sugeng. Here, here it means, if I'm Maitreya, and my computer is enlightenment, this is enlightenment, I'm Maitreya. And we are THOG PA by one birth only. Roxanna (translator): We are now blocked by one birth only. From the audience: What does it mean? It's not realization. No. Roxanna (translator): Here it means, there is only one birth between, between me and him. Geshe Michael Roach: Between me and enlightenment. Roxanna (translator): One more. From the audience: The sutra refers to Maitreya, called Maitreya, as SKYE BA GCIG THOG PA (?) One life. One life to enlightenment. Go. Roxanna (translator): One life to go. One life to go. From the audience: It means he's not a Buddha. Geshe Michael Roach: But he must be a Bodhisattva. If he only has 50 years, 70 years to go. So, who said that? That 18,000 line Prajnaparamita, who spoke that? Lord Buddha. Which turning of the wheel? Roxanna (translator): Second. Geshe Michael Roach: Second. Same as Xing Jing, same as Jing Kang Jing. So, our debater, come on, Maitreya is not a Buddha yet. Why you say that? He's called a one to go. It doesn't mean he ordered a hamburger to go. He ordered a hamburger to go. Buddha referred to Maitreya in the Perfection of Wisdom as a guy who has one more to go. Roxanna (translator): The context of the quotation Somebody asked Buddha a question about emptiness. Geshe Michael Roach: And he said, BYAMS PA LA THI (?) ZHIG BYAMS PA LA THI The answer he gave was ... No, he said BYAMS PA LA THI The person asked Buddha a question about emptiness. Roxanna (translator): Buddha said, BYAMS PA LA THI She means question. Geshe Michael Roach: What? You go ask ... Go ask Maitreya. Roxanna (translator): Don't ask me. Geshe Michael Roach: He's okay, he's pretty good. He's got one lifetime to go. Probably he can answer an emptiness question. Got it? And DRIN PAR (?) L-D-O-N Miscarved in the carving. It means he will return with an answer. So, here's the quotation. Hey dude, don't ask me about it. You got Maitreya. He's one birth away from enlightenment. Ask him about emptiness. Probably he knows something. And that statement by Lord Buddha proves that Maitreya is not yet a Buddha. Roxanna (translator): That's not true. Geshe Michael Roach: If Shakyamuni Buddha referred to Maitreya as one more life to go, probably, Maitreya is not a Buddha yet. Okay, we got ... Are we doing the ... We got about 12 more minutes. You tech guys might want to fix your clock. Roxanna (translator): I see this. Geshe Michael Roach: Okay, all right. Say again? Right, but ... Roxanna (translator): The total time is 11. Geshe Michael Roach: Yeah, I understand. Roxanna (translator): At 11 o'clock, Mixed Nuts Translator Group tradition, Grandpa will go sit down with Jasmine and Tim and then Tim will lead a discussion. For 15 minutes. Geshe Michael Roach: Is there anything we talked about this morning that you can use in your real life? Then our big group around the world called Worldview Group loosely associated 41 groups. They all started with Grandpa 100 years ago. I felt like each group doesn't know what the other group is doing. So, like five years ago, I asked my friend, Juan Hasso. Can you do a weekly news show? And you talk about what the different groups are doing so we all know what we're doing. I hope the Ukrainskis will send us some news more regularly. So, at 11 o'clock, Tim will lead a 15-minute discussion. Roxanna (translator): How can you use this book in your real life? Geshe Michael Roach: And then Hasso will come with the news for 15 minutes. Then the restaurant will come with lunch. Roxanna (translator): Okay, here we go. Geshe Michael Roach: BYAMS PA NGON DU GYUR PA (?) means NGON DU GYUR PA means the dude is sitting here. Okay, got it, okay. Roxanna (translator): Talk to him. Geshe Michael Roach: But that's a ... we call loaded word. It's also part of the name of his most famous book. Abhisamaya Avalokiteshvara. The Buddha in this sentence says Look, Maitreya is Abhi. Roxanna (translator): He's sitting here. Geshe Michael Roach: You can talk to him. But it's a Buddha pun. Because this Abhi later is going to write the Abhisamaya Avalokiteshvara. Understand? Roxanna (translator): Cool. Okay, here we go. Tim Lowenhaupt: Who's going to read, Tim? Let's just give it to Gibson. From the audience: Nice. Cool. Tim Lowenhaupt: Nice. Nice, Tim. Geshe Michael Roach: LAM SHES NYIN PO RGYEN (?) is a famous commentary by Justin Kopp (?). And he's going to quote that commentary. By the way, he wrote it when I think he wrote it when he was 26. In English, it will be 6,000 pages. If you want $1,000, tell me the first work that Tsongkapa ever wrote which was published. From the audience: Which was published by us or by him? Roxanna (translator): In his term. In his era. Geshe Michael Roach: Basically, what's the first book he ever wrote? Gibson, you're not supposed to know it. I'm going home with less money than when I came here. From the audience: Is it the letter to Tsargu Rinpoche? The letter to the friar prince Tsargu Rinpoche. Roxanna (translator): Oh, no. Good guess, but not. Geshe Michael Roach: Gibson, don't take my money. It's not... Gibson, don't take my money. Sit down. It's not respectful. Wait, Gibson. Rob, Gibson. From the audience: Wait, hold on. Half? He said, give me half. Roxanna (translator): Is it Abhidharmakosha? Abhidharmakosha, no. Geshe Michael Roach: OK, last try. From the audience: Do you know the answer? Do you know the answer or not? Roxanna (translator): No, cancel. Geshe Michael Roach: He wrote a love poem to Sarasvati. The goddess of music and poetry. I think he was 16. And it's extraordinary. And you almost feel like they had a relationship. Maybe he saw her as a Buddha. I don't know. I'm so happy no one could guess. What's this thing? Tim Lowenhaupt: You want to try? It's already been read. From the audience: Did you read it already? Tim Lowenhaupt: Yeah, we read it already. From the audience: Did we read it already? Tim Lowenhaupt: Sakyong Wangchuk (?). Geshe Michael Roach: Sakyong Wangchuk. Tim Lowenhaupt: The lord of the ten bodhisattva levels? Geshe Michael Roach: Yeah, lord of the tenth bodhisattva level. Now, some people say tenth level bodhisattva is the same as a Buddha. Some people say you have to reach ten and a half and then you're a Buddha. I think probably here it means a Buddha. And they're referring to Maitreya as a tenth level bodhisattva, which means a Buddha. And it says people came to that bodhisattva and asked him questions. But we just said he's a Buddha. Roxanna (translator): How's that possible? Geshe Michael Roach: Every Buddha is also a bodhisattva. But not every bodhisattva is a Buddha. If the bodhisattva reached the tenth level, generally you can say Buddha. I'll give you an interesting question. The day you see emptiness directly and you have a bodhisattva experience, which of the ten bodhisattva levels are you? Roxanna (translator): Yeah, you're level one. Geshe Michael Roach: So that high, high goal to see emptiness directly is a baby bodhisattva. And still have five hundred years to go to reach the tenth level. And that's what those four red books are really about. How to go from one to ten. And each book gets more and more mysterious. I mean you get up around ... my Geshe debate was level seven. And it's already ... you can't imagine anything. Roxanna (translator): You can debate it, but you don't understand anything. Geshe Michael Roach: Okay, so anyway, they refer to him as a tenth level bodhisattva. Roxanna (translator): Seems like they are talking about the seven bodhisattvas. So it looks like they are talking about a Buddha. Geshe Michael Roach: But actually not necessarily. Roxanna (translator): Okay, you got time? You got any time? Yeah, we have fifty seconds. Tim Lowenhaupt: We didn't finish the last two lines. Geshe Michael Roach: Yeah, that's all I want to do. From the audience: Okay, got it. RGYAL BA MA YIN (?) It's not contradictory. Geshe Michael Roach: It's not contradictory to call him a bodhisattva who has not reached Buddhahood and also call him a Buddha. It's not contradiction to call Maitreya a bodhisattva who is not a Buddha and also call him a tenth level bodhisattva, which is a Buddha. From the audience: For a hundred dollars, Tim, how could it be not contradictory? Geshe Michael Roach: Which is what this next sentence says. RGYAL BA'I KHYAN MED (?) It's not contradictory. To call Maitreya a bodhisattva who is not a Buddha and also call him a Buddha who is a bodhisattva. To call him a bodhisattva and a Buddha. Roxanna (translator): I'm sorry. Geshe Michael Roach: To call him a bodhisattva who is not a Buddha and to call him a bodhisattva who is a Buddha is not a contradiction. Tim Lowenhaupt: RGYAL BA'I KHYAN MED It depends on what system you are coming from. Yeah. Geshe Michael Roach: From which point of view. So, there is a debate. So, he says, you know, Mr. Tim, is Maitreya a Buddha or a bodhisattva? And is it contradictory for one person to say he's a bodhisattva and the other one say he's a Buddha? Roxanna (translator): And Tim's answer, no contradiction, depends on what system you're in. Geshe Michael Roach: If you're in the secret system, your mother was certainly a Buddha. Roxanna (translator): And if you're not in the secret system, maybe she's just a very nice lady. No contradiction. Geshe Michael Roach: So if someone asks you on the airplane, was your mother a Buddha? You have to say, well, which system? From the audience: Which system are you guys? You are secret tantra. Geshe Michael Roach: You believe your mother was a Buddha. Roxanna (translator): Once you get transmission, you have to believe your mother was a Buddha. Geshe Michael Roach: Okay, Tim's going to answer questions. Tim Lowenhaupt: No, no, no, sit here, sit here. I think there's lots of directions we could go. But I think it'd be nice if you have any questions about today. From the audience: In thinking about maybe all the teachings we received this week, how can it help us? Tim Lowenhaupt: Wow, total silence. Question from the audience: I have a question. Come on up. Oh. Kidding, kidding, kidding. I guess my thought was, what's the big deal? From the audience: Whether Maitreya is a Buddha or not. Question from the audience: Because if he's a Bodhisattva, who's about to become a Buddha, that's already pretty amazing for me. And I don't really have a problem with that time period, I guess. So it's not that I struggle, but I wonder, is that something I should maybe figure out sooner? Because if 400 years or 500 years is not that long, then what's the problem? Tim Lowenhaupt: I think from that perspective, sure. I mean, this is the one hustle question. If he only had one lifetime left, when the Buddha said that, I mean, unless he's been living for 2500 years, then he would be already a Buddha. But I think there's a different way to look at it. Like the struggle to understand whether he's a Bodhisattva or a Buddha, which we've been doing for six months now. Personally, if I think about the way that I look at the world, like is Rob just Rob? A great Bodhisattva, who might have one lifetime left, or is Rob already a Buddha pretending to be Rob, looking like Rob to help me? From the audience: Or is Rob already a Buddha? He's just pretending to be Rob to help me? So I'm going to throw this question to him, to ask Rob this question. When I think like this, how can this kind of view help me? Question from the audience: It's pretty amazing, extraordinarily amazing. It would certainly change driving a car differently. That's for sure. Tim Lowenhaupt: I love following Rob in his brand new BMW X5. From the audience: M-Power. Tim Lowenhaupt: Excuse me, his M-Power X5. Because not only am I following a really good car, but anything that I would be doing, like planting seeds with Rob, like serving him or offering anything to him, the power of the seed increases based on a correct conception of that person. Now is Rob really a Buddha? That's my big question. Question from the audience: Wait, I mean I'd be okay with that. I would not have a problem with that at all. I'm not keeping it from you for sure. Tim Lowenhaupt: Can I decide definitively that he is a Buddha or he is not a Buddha? Do you want to come up, Sugen? Come on up. From the audience: I was pretty intrigued by Rob's question about what's the big deal about being a Bodhisattva or Buddha. And coming at this point, coming at this point, preparing people for the October transmission, I think Lord Buddha is giving us a hint. Hey, all of you are learning the open teaching. Do you know that Maitreya has two... We can see Maitreya from two different angles. All of you thought that Maitreya is a Bodhisattva. But looking at it from the secret teaching perspective, he is a Buddha. If you're interested in getting enlightened in one lifetime like Maitreya, next life, come and join us. Something like that. So why did I put the pen in my mouth? Yeah, so I think Lord Buddha is telling us, Hey, all of you should be ready to embark on that journey if you have the right seeds. Tim Lowenhaupt: You didn't answer my question. Question from the audience: In class yesterday, we discussed the bathroom stall meditation. Do you guys remember that one? From the audience: And I'm like super skeptical of it. Question from the audience: But I tried anyway. So I thought, there will be a day I'll be a Buddha for sure. And at that moment, I will be seeing this directly. So even the conversation I'm having now, as a Buddha, I'll see this moment directly. So in a way, I'm having a conversation with me now, my future. And then I think it goes back to what Geshe-la said, that the Buddha is having a direct, they see this directly, us sitting here currently, where they were in the past. So when you see, when the Buddha said, Oh, it's one life, so Maitreya, it's not like he didn't know what was going to happen. So he's completely aware of our conversation right now as well. So in a way, I don't think of it so much as he's 2,500 years ago, but like here right now. Tim Lowenhaupt: Any other questions here? Or discussion points? You can come up. Host: We have two minutes, very far. Oh, two minutes. Okay, say from there. From the audience: Hello. I think about the ideal image of a pot and actual pot. And it looks like easy that we find a real pot, because it's opposite side of anything what is not pot. And I think about Buddha or Bodhisattva, or my mother is Buddha or not, because how can we find Buddha? It's anyone who opposite from not Buddha. And it looks like also easy, but actually we don't know who is not Buddha. And because of that, we can't know he's Buddha or not. Tim Lowenhaupt: I think the idea is that we're cooking right now. It's worth to continue to cook. Like struggling with it, like which one is it? Which one is appearing to me now? What could appear to me? Am I misunderstanding what's appearing to me? I think taking the time and meditation and just walking around right now to cook all of that is the power of the practice. From the audience: Thank you Geshe-la for teaching us. Tim Lowenhaupt: Please stay. Host: And you three world news in the house. From the audience: Are you going to stay? Guapo. Guapo. Which one? Host: I only have one. Welcome Emily. Thank you for translating. Thank you Rob for checking that I don't say crazy things. They have to put a police next to me. But he's a really good police. Rob has helped me many times with this project. As well as Tim has. From the audience: I don't know where he went. Host: Thank you Tim. Because yesterday I realized how much you have helped me. There were times like I didn't know anything about tech table. I didn't have any equipment. I didn't know how to connect the cables. Didn't? Did you say didn't? I did not? From the audience: Now I know. I've been learning. Host: So I called Tim like I have a program. When is the program? Like at noon. What day? Today. I don't have anybody to help me. And he'll be like. I'll be there in an hour. So thank you. Thank you for all your help. Really everyone who has supported this program. I'm about to explain quickly what is this about. Maybe people are wondering what am I doing here. From the audience: So Brian was doing a very evil thing. Host: He wanted to fire Pichuquino. From the audience: He wanted to hide Pichuquino. Pichuquino is my little helper. And Rob will help me press Pichuquino. And Brian gave me this thing. This is more modern, more AI. Host: I like people. But I guess AI is good too. So maybe I tell you. No, you help me. I tell you. This is just an emergency. From the audience: Alright, let's go. Host: And thank you Geshe-la. At the end of the day, your kindness always has the day. So thank you. Okay, every Monday. From the audience: Every Saturday. Host: We get together in Rimrock. And we have... First picture please. Xuanzang Tower. This is what we are doing today. From the audience: You can just repeat what I say. Host: Or not. You can just repeat what I say. Xuanzang Tower. Alright. You can come. You can learn this wonderful wisdom. And every day. After the class. After the discussion. We talk about the World View Network. So basically, our job in Peach Tree World News is to talk about all the wonderful things you are doing. Geshe Michael was very wise. He said, this guy is always thinking about himself. Let's give him a job. Let's put him to speak about other people's projects. And let me tell you super fun. So if you have cool projects. From the audience: Let me know. Host: Even if you don't think they are cool. From the audience: Let me know. Host: Okay. Every Monday, every Saturday we do this. Next picture please. From the audience: Pichiquino. Host: Good Night Book Club. Is the machine who supports this project. So if you want to support this project. From the audience: If you want to see emptiness directly. Host: You get, how do you say it Rob? You pay one, you get two. Hello? From the audience: Hold on, hold on. Host: We have breaking news. We have breaking news also. I'm nervous. There was an auction for this. These are all personally signed by Geshe Michael. The money goes to support all of the translators. So Tim can buy hairspray. The Ukrainians love Tim. Do you love Tim? So actually somebody actually paid $12,000 for these books. And that will actually go straight to the insurance. I don't know if she wants to come up. She does. From the audience: Can the woman who got the books. Host: Lindsay why don't you come up and present it very quickly. From the audience: Can Lindsay come up and present it for us. Host: Can Li Ben Yu come up to the stage. I present it to you. It's heavy, let someone else. From the audience: Can a volunteer come here? Host: Thank you very much for helping the translator program. From the audience: Thank you teacher for giving me the opportunity to serve. Host: And these were all signed by Geshe Michael for you. That's a lot of good night book club nights. You should be busy for a while. From the audience: Thank you. He will push me to learn English. Host: I want to show you real quick Brian if you can help me to the PPT, the snow in the mountain please. From the audience: The snow girl over there. Host: Check it out. This is our friend Joel from ALL. He pretty much worked in this presentation in Japan. So you can call it either way. I was lazy or I was smart. I just say Joel come on share with me. So I want to show you the snow in the mountain system. What we do with these books. And how the world view network. All the organizations that share the world view that Geshe-la was talking about. Wow that's long. How they operate in the world. And Rob is here to correct me. He is one of the managers of the world view network. Because you help Geshe-la a lot. You need to know how everything works. So that's why I say unofficially you are one of the managers. So I hope you are kind to me later when I ask for a favor. From the audience: All right let's go Brian. Host: 100 dollars. From the audience: Thank you so much. Host: Let's go to the mountain please. From the audience: Let's go straight to the mountain. Host: Yes okay. So wisdom is like snow in this example. Wisdom falls from heaven. Like snow falls from sky. In Spanish sky and heaven are the same word. Maybe there is a relationship. All right everything starts with ALL. From the audience: Then it flows down to DCC when they translate the programs. Host: From there many organizations start using the system and the wisdom to teach and train teachers. Then international programs happen. Perfect I have it here. Yes the next one. What? Brian wants me to do it. All right students international events happen all over. And then there are other organizations who operate in like the world in disguise kind of thing. The idea of the snow is to flow down from heaven or sky and make this a beautiful perfect world. We are all there in this beautiful path. So five houses today is one of these many organizations. And like this there are many many many more. 41 or something 42. All right so I want to talk about some of them upcoming events. No. From the audience: Or yes. Host: No. Brian. Hustle there's a question actually here. From the five houses audience member. They would like to know are you single? And if so how can I get your phone number? So. The first time people ask is. Listen. It's a debate. Yes. No. No no no no. From the audience: No baby here. Host: I'm going to say he's definitely single but let's see. From the audience: No. Host: I learned after many times that you said this for me. The answer really really to be honest is depends who's asking. All right. Well you wanted to know. Let's go. No no no no. From the audience: No. No. Host: No. No. No. From the audience: No. No. No. Host: No. From the audience: No. My name is John Brady.
