And today is the sixth day and also the last day of this class. How time flies, right? So how are you feeling? Are you feeling excited? Wow, thank you. Already we all slept very late last night, but today I see every of your smell very fresh, refreshed. Thank you for all of the cooperation and we help each other every day to ensure everything goes smoothly and wonderfully these days. It's all our efforts make this all happen. And let's find some, feel some great gratitude and joy in our hearts. Be joyful and be grateful for all the things happen these days, for all the wonderful teachers, for our volunteers, and for your group leaders, for everyone has given us all this help to make all this happen. And we also need to thank for ourselves. It is you, it is everyone of us who have created all these miracles. And when we feel this gratitude for everyone, for ourselves, for our seeds, we can think about the emptiness. What we have feel grateful for, they don't come from themselves. So if we can have, we can feel the gratitude, and we can have the consciousness, we have the awareness of emptiness, this is the best state of mind that we can be prepared for the coming teachings from our teacher. Welcome our dear teachers, Mr. Michael and the teacher Stanley. [Welcoming chant/song sung as the teacher enters — English lyrics only, tune not identified] Geshe Michael Roach: Good translator. I like to make monkey noises at home to wake up my wife. She really appreciates it. Yeah, so Brian, let's start around the ice cream and the chocolate sauce, because I miss it. Thank you. So, we were ... actually we reached that big day of your whole life. Buddhism says there are five stages in a human life. First one is where you start to see the problems of life. Second one, you start to understand cause and effect. Third one, you see emptiness directly. Fourth one, you get used to what you saw. And then fifth one, you finish all your problems. So, what's funny is that the first path can take a million years. But the most important part of the second path and the third path happen in the same day. And so, you know, actually only silver color and black color are coming to your eyes. And then the seeds are opening in your mind and pictures are cascading out. I like to say the pieces of the object are like ice cream balls. And the chocolate sauce which unifies all of them together. That's the pictures coming out of your mind. By the way, these two are cards from our recent DCI level. We have about 200 life tools were developed in DCI over the last 17 years. And we made cards, playing cards that you can test yourself. And I'm happy to say that Rosa and our friend, David, they made a little meditation timer. It's called CAT. I forget why. Yeah, or clock ... something timer. Oh, it's clock timer. Clock application timer. Clock. Alarm clock. It's a small box that looks like an alarm clock. You can use it as a meditation timer. You can use it as a good night book club wake or upper. And if you hit another button, it will quiz you about the life tools of DCI. And it will show you pictures, and you have to guess what's the picture. So, these are actually two cards from the app. We're trying to get it ready by the time of Shenzhen in September. Alright. Talk to Rosa. You can pre-order? You can pre-order? No. Not yet. In Shenzhen. In Shenzhen. Okay. Because when Rob takes your phone and your computer, you still need an alarm clock. Okay, next picture. ——— Slide 1 · Kinesthetic misapprehension ——— [] Geshe Michael Roach: In my three-year retreat, I studied ballet. And I worked hard on it. For three years. And every three, four months, a ballet teacher came from the University of Arizona and taught us. And there's a principle in ballet called kinesthetic misapprehension. Kinesthetic means how do you move your body. Misapprehension means it feels like your leg is straight, but your leg is not straight, but you can't see it, so you don't know. Then the ballet teacher will yell at you, your back leg is crooked. No, no, it feels correct. Yeah, it feels correct, but it's not correct. Why are we talking about that in the pot on the stove? It feels like the pictures cascading out of your mind start in the back of your head. Then it feels like they come out here. Actually, those seeds where they come from are potential. Karma or karmic seeds are potential. They are not physical. And they stay in your mind, but they are not made of mind. Because the definition of mind is sel shing rikpa (?). Invisible and knowing. Your karmic seeds, your seeds stay in your mind, but they are not part of your mind. They don't think. They don't see things. They just stay there. And they are ... In the ancient language, they are called may be happen. They are may be happen. Karma seed is may be happen. If it's a bad seed, and you do your four powers, the may be happen switches to a never happen. If you are sharing your ice cream, then the may be happen turns into more ice cream. Kinesthetically, how does it feel in your head? On the day you see the pot on the stone, it feels like the picture is coming out of nowhere. At the back of your head. Inside your skull. And then it feels like those pictures are luminous. They have light. Like a light bulb. So, luminous pictures are traveling from the back of your head to your forehead. And then they are cascading down. And making the pot on the stone. And they are not really coming out of your head. But it feels like that. Okay, understand? Like your leg is not really straight, but it feels straight. Okay, next picture. I forget what this one means. Oh, yeah. In English we say Chinese wise man immortal. I don't know if you have it in China, but in America we have it in China. And there are old, old guys. They live for thousands of years. They are immortal. We think Chinese immortal. Like Jet Li. Like Jet Li. Why I put this picture? After you see the pictures cascading. And up two hours later, three hours later, when you see emptiness directly. MIN GDOG PA (?) Nothing can stop you. There is no force in the universe which can stop you. If Buddha really want to stop you, cannot. It's MIN GDOG PA, nothing can stop you. ——— Slide 2 · A temporary immortality ——— [] Geshe Michael Roach: During those two or three hours, you are immortal. If nuclear bomb explode at Rashi Gyempo Ling Mongo (?) temple, Geshe-la still will not die. Still will not, cannot, cannot die. After you see emptiness, can die, will die. So try to wait as long as you can. Just kidding. Next picture. ——— Slide 3 · Rinpoche & Tilopa: a place of the holy ones ——— [] Geshe Michael Roach: This is my teacher, Khen Rinpoche. I only saw him out of his robes twice. One time we went to the beach in New Jersey. I stepped on a syringe. Needle, drug needle. I said, I will go surfing in California, but not New Jersey. He didn't wear his robes. We had to take a passport picture. So, he agreed to wear a shirt. I love this picture. He took it for his passport. On the right is a teacher, a Mongo, named Shaila M. Chee (?). Shaila M. Chee. In Mongolia, all the doctors are monks. The Mongol word for doctor is M. Chee. I think it might be related to MD, I don't know. M. Chee. He was a wonderful traditional doctor who escaped Nazi Germany and came to the US and lived in hell. The one on the right. Glasses. The one with glasses, the one on the right. He escaped from the concentration camp and finally came to the US as a Mongolian monk. The one in the middle is called DEL BA KHO THUG TU. KHO THUG TU means Rinpoche. THUG TU DEL BA means Tilopa. (?) It's the Mongol pronunciation of Tilopa. They said he was a reincarnation of Tilopa. Naropa's teacher. ——— Slide 4 · A place where the wise have practiced ——— [] Geshe Michael Roach: Vajrayogini's boyfriend's teacher. And these three teachers practiced for many, many years in that Mongol temple. The two Mongols passed away before I came. Just before I came. But what I want to say is that temple is very powerful karmically. And if you want to try to see emptiness directly, it's much easier if you find a place where people like this stayed there for a long time. And it's much, much easier to see. So, try to find a place like that to practice. I don't know, if you live in Ukraine or Moscow, or ... what do you call that little suburb of Moscow where Maria comes from? Nizhny Novgorod. Lower Novgorod. If you live in a city where there was no Aryas before, then you have to do the blessing yourself. No choice. The person is more important than the place. If you can't find a place which is pre-blessed, then god damn it, bless it yourself. Next picture. ——— Slide 5 · The sutras at the Mongol temple ——— [] Geshe Michael Roach: This is the inside of the Mongol temple. And this is where I saw emptiness. I was lucky because those Mongols were all old. And they didn't come much to the temple, maybe once every two weeks or so. So, I had the temple to myself to meditate most of the time. If you look carefully on the right side, you can see little boxes. That's the only copy of the Sutras and Tantras in North and South America. They're all carvings. So, if you want to see kongxing, maybe find the only Mongol temple that has the Kangyir in two continents. ——— Slide 6 · Aspect [9]: nirodha, 20 minutes in the truth of the end ——— [] Geshe Michael Roach: And that place is blessed. Can you guys skip to the ... I think there's some diamonds starting. I don't know where. Yeah, thank you. Man, you guys are good. You guys are hot. So, there's not much to say about the direct perception of emptiness. It's only 20 minutes. Something like 20 minutes, maybe half hour. First you have to go into shamatha. And there's a strange kinesthetic misapprehension. It feels like you are going up in an elevator. ——— Slide 7 · A mental picture of the two levels of reality ——— [] Geshe Michael Roach: You are not going up in an elevator, but it feels like it. And actually, technically you are ... This is a special concentration level. It has to be that level. You cannot be deeper and you cannot be less deep. You have to be between these two levels. If you go too deep, it's similar to getting anesthesia in the hospital. And you're still alive, but you're very unclear. Your mind is too unclear. If you don't go deep enough, your mind is too busy to see emptiness. So, it takes a lot of practice to get off the elevator at the right place. And then, you go into emptiness. And there's a couple of things going on. Emptiness is not a positive thing. It's empty. It's something's missing. When you see your best friend, you know, you feel happy. That's like seeing Ingo (?). You tend to listen to him. Cause and effect. When you see the ice cream pot. Pot on the stove. Ice cream. Everything's like ice cream in my mind. Ingo. Cause and effect. What's a new word, JB? Cascading pictures. That's a positive thing. You can see it. That's Ingo. That's emptiness. You can't see anything. Okay? Different. This one, you see something which is there. Pictures are cascading down. When you see emptiness, your mind is on something missing. It's an absence. It's something is not there that you thought was there. And that's a very interesting twenty minutes. Next picture. One more for you. Okay. During that twenty minutes, if you think, I did it! Emptiness spits you out. You go back to the temple. The elevator goes whoop. Really it spits you out. It kicks you out. ——— Slide 8 · A list of the things you don't see ——— [] Geshe Michael Roach: Okay, you have to concentrate on the absence. I mean, when you see the pot on the stove, you see the absence of a pot which is not cascading pictures. The thing you don't see in the direct perception of emptiness is a Michael which is not coming from your seeds. And if your name is Stanley, you see there's no Stanley who is not coming from his seeds. If you see a Stanley which is coming from his seeds, that means you woke up and you are brushing your teeth. That Stanley exists. That Stanley is coming from you. But when you see kongxing, what you're looking at is you are not there. You who is not cascading pictures is not there, and was never there, and could not be there. Is there any Michael who is not coming from his pictures? No, no such thing. That's not called pot on the stove, that's called direct perception of emptiness. Do you got a Muhammad Ali? Do you know what he looks like? Somewhere there. There's an X, red. Maybe it's in the last reading. Anyway, there's a great boxer. In fact, the greatest. It's got an X. Yeah, there you go. Okay, that's Muhammad Ali. Greatest boxer in history. He doesn't have a problem of modesty. He said, he'd get up, he'd stand up, he'd say, I'm the greatest! I'm the greatest! Okay, he's very famous for saying, I'm the greatest. And it's irritating because he is the greatest. He's so fast. He refuses to put up his arms. He doesn't go like this. Nobody can hear him. He was the greatest. And he is a very cool guy. Why I put him there? When you see kongxing directly, you should say, I did it! But if you think about me, it will spit you out. Because you are not emptiness. Okay? ——— Slide 9 · The great irony of not being able to say, “I did it!” ——— [] Geshe Michael Roach: In English we say ironic. The greatest moment in billion lifetimes, you cannot say, I did it! Because if Stanley thinks about Stanley, during the direct perception of emptiness, that direct perception will spit him out. Good translation. By the way, I know these two kids, Stanley and Xiaoping, for 15 years. Vivian brought them to me. She was very kind. Thank you. Thank you. Then I like to joke. Maybe you noticed. And I always teach them new idioms. Like, I'll say, go kick butt. And I'll say, wow, I can't translate this. Go kick butt. How do you translate this? It means you have to do something great. Then I taught them English for 15 years. And I taught them many ... I teach them two or three idioms every day. Now they know thousands of idioms. They talk English better than English talkers. Then we had an idea. The three of us are going to write a new book. It's called Kick Butt. I don't know how to translate this. Mastering English Idioms. So it's a book of idioms. I still don't know how to translate this word. It means try hard. Kick butt. So I want to call the ... Pigu, kick the pigu. So I want to call the book Kick Butt Mastering English Idioms. And then we'll sell it in China. And finally we make some money. So you got to give me idioms, you know. Alright. Next picture. ——— Slide 10 · Neither is time itself the simple absence of a me from its own side ——— [] Geshe Michael Roach: Maybe go back to the ... Yeah, yeah, here. So during the direct perception of emptiness, twenty minutes, roughly, you cannot think me. If you think me, your meditation will stop. Ironically, you cannot see the time. If you look at the time, if you think of the time, it will kick you out of emptiness. So you cannot think about yourself, you cannot think about the time. You just in the direct perception that there's no Michael who's not cascading pictures. And then after twenty, thirty minutes you come down. Changing the level of focus feels like coming down an elevator. It's not, but it feels like that. I would say there's one or two instantaneous thoughts. I did it. After all these years, I did it. You check the time. There was a clock behind me on the wall. ——— Slide 11 · Searching, somewhat desperately, for a way not to forget ——— [] Geshe Michael Roach: Check the time, it's about twenty, thirty minutes. Then I would say the third thought, and these are coming like this, very fast. The third thought is I reached a different world. I was in a different world. Then this world is like a sandwich. This world has two halves. And I visited the other half, which is emptiness. And then I came back to usual half. And then every Arya in history has the same thought. How am I going to remember this? How can I remember this? And you feel desperate to remember. You realize you must remember. You cannot forget. You think, what's the closest thing on this part of the sandwich to the higher part of the sandwich? What's the closest thing? And every Arya in history comes to diamond. And the reasons are famous. They are in DCI Level 7. They are in the Diamond Cutter Business Book. Diamond is the closest thing in the physical universe to the ultimate thing. There's a system in gemology of the hardness of rocks. It's called Mohs Scale. Here's the scientist's name. The softest mineral is talc. They make white powder for ladies' face. And that's one. Then you go up. Harder, harder, harder. Number nine is corundum, which means ruby or sapphire. They are the same chemical. Number ten is diamond. The difference between nine and ten is a million times the difference between one and nine. Between all, the whole scale from talc to ruby, all that doesn't equal one million of the distance between these two. Ten is a million times harder than nine. Nine is like three times harder than one. So, it's the closest thing to something which is the most of anything. Is there a longest thing in the universe? No, you can always add one more inch. Is there a shortest thing in the universe? No, you can always divide. But there is a hardest thing in the universe. And that's a diamond. And that's the only thing in the natural universe which is the most of anything. And so, every Arya in history, when they came down, they were trying to think of something to remember what they saw. And they always have the same thought. Diamond is the best I can do, even though it's not perfect. What came in my mind was that diamond is the best I can do, even though it's not perfect. What came in my mind at that moment was the word near diamond. Diamond is near. If you wanted to write a book about it, you could say the Near Diamond Sutra, or maybe you could call it the Diamond Cutter Sutra. And that's why the Diamond Cutter Sutra is not the Diamond Sutra, it's the Diamond Cutter Sutra. Here's a new idiom for Stanley. Diamond is close, but no cigar. No cigar means you almost reached that prize, but you didn't get it. Diamond is the best and it sucks. Not close at all. Is the diamond the closest thing to kongxing? Yes. Is it close? Not at all. But there's nothing ... This universe is incomplete. We don't have anything close to kongxing. And don't forget this picture. On the left is a Diamond Cutter Sutra found in Dunhuang. Oldest printed book in the world with a date in it. And easily the most reproduced book in history. Gutenberg came ... I'm sorry about the Deutschlanters, but he's like a thousand years ... he's 500 years late or something. This book has been reproduced the most in any country in the world. Jinkanzui (?), yeah. Yeah, printing. Printing is the highest in any country. ——— Slide 12 · Those who understand cutting diamonds ——— [] Geshe Michael Roach: So on the left is a Diamond Cutter and on the right is a Diamond Cutter. You cannot ... You cannot cut a ... What should I say? Diamond is the hardest thing in the universe, but you can cut it. And that's a Diamond Cutting Saw. And it's made of copper and it cuts diamond. Because you put olive oil on the saw and then you put diamond powder. Diamond has grains like wood, like firewood. If you cut along the grain with a diamond against the grain, it will cut. So, every Arya, in history, when they come down, they will instinctively search for a metaphor in the real world. And they will come to the diamond. And they have always come to the diamond. That's why there's a Diamond Way. That's why there's a Diamond Cutter. Vajrapani, Vajradhara, all your tantric deities. Why they all have diamond in their name? Why is the Diamond Cutter called the Diamond Cutter if there's not one diamond in the whole sutra? I almost said stupid sutra. Sutra. There's a reason. And if you see emptiness directly, you start a lifelong love affair with diamond. That's also an idiom. And to be honest, I didn't give a damn about diamonds before that. I don't think I ever touched a diamond before that. ——— Slide 13 · One I had only heard about ——— [] Geshe Michael Roach: I think my mom had one on her ring, but I never touched it or anything. But after that 20 minutes, diamond is the most important symbol in the whole world for the Arya. And I decided to work in the diamond business and I registered a company called Near Diamond. 64 West 48th Street in the diamond district. I had an office. 64 West 48th Street. Like 42nd floor. And I found out ——— Slide 14 · “Near Diamond” didn't quite work ——— [] Geshe Michael Roach: you cannot sell real diamonds if you call your company Near Diamond. No, you're selling fake diamonds. No, no, the diamond is real, but the diamond is only close to the real diamond. Then I changed the name. I designed a beautiful stationery company letterhead. And I'll show it to you. I called it Hancock Diamond. That's my wife's maiden name. This company I made in ... what was that? Anyway, 50 years ago. What's that logo mean? That logo is four diamonds. Five diamonds. But my wife is also very Christian. So I thought it's a mixture of Buddhism and Christianity. ——— Slide 15 · Sugar crystal drink stirring sticks: the best I could do ——— [] Geshe Michael Roach: So we are also. That company was a complete failure, just so you know. I think Anton knows. Every great businessman who's successful had a great failure just before. And I won't tell you the whole story. Okay, next picture. So I thought ... In the following months, I wanted to have diamonds around. But I didn't have any money. Then I was at the grocery store, and I saw ... These are sugar crystals. And they grow them on a stick. Thank you. You're so sweet. She's so sweet. So I used to go to the store every day and buy these. They use these to make alcohol drinks. They mix the sugar in the alcohol. It's called crystal sugar. Okay, and then when you make the cocktail, you mix the crystal sugar in there to season it. So I would buy one every day to put on the altar for Buddha. And if you don't have a lot of money and you want a nice offering to ... Buddha's like this one. I strongly encourage you to buy this one. And keep it on your altar. Offer a fresh one every day. I couldn't afford more than that. At that time, I couldn't afford anything more diamond-like. I cannot hear. Nowadays, you can buy this ring. Can we project this on the screen? I designed this ring in Shanghai, I remember. I had coffee with the founder of DiDi, which is bigger than Uber. It's the Chinese Uber. I was trying to get a donation for John. Get a donation for John. And he said no. But, by the way, for every donation me and John got, we got 99 no's, right? Okay. So, this is a ... I call it a meditation ring. I'm not trying to make money, okay? I have enough money, I don't want more money. I pay my accountant more than I make. I don't need more money. But, you need this. Okay? And if you can, you should get one. We made one a couple of years ago. We used a special diamond from India called Poki. And it kept this one, and it kept chipping. So, Rosa did a lot of research. Of course, Rosa found a rose-cut diamond. And that's called a rose-cut. And it's very strong. And it's like a triangle. So, we made a new meditation ring. You put it on your finger, and you make a circle. And you meditate with your finger on the diamond. Then in between you can wear it. Every time your friend says, you have a beautiful ring, the ring will smile at you. And it will say, did you meditate today? I think it's 8,000 US. We overcharge. We pay the company salaries. We pay the company taxes. And the rest we always donate in the country where we are. So far, selling these in China, we donated a lot of money to save the books at Dunhuang. Now, if you don't want to buy it, get a small diamond. Five-point diamond. A little bit bigger than a piece of sand. Take it to the temple, the dentist. Have them drill a hole in your tooth. Glue it in your tooth. Okay? Then you'll never forget it. If you want to remember kongxing, you go ... Your friends say, why don't you talk to me? Why are you going like that? I'm just touching my diamond. You know what I mean? Okay. I put this diamond in shortly after I saw emptiness. One broke already. One diamond didn't break, the tooth broke. Now I put a fake tooth. That diamond is ... That's cheaper than this one. That diamond you can get for, I don't know, $20 or something. The dentist is, I don't know ... In America, you have to give them your house. Okay, I'm suggesting how to keep a diamond with you. Next picture. This is a long, beautiful story. I don't have time to tell you the whole story. But the professor who taught me Buddhism first, he was a great disciple of Merch Eliada, University of Chicago. Eliada was the main disciple of Carl Jung. Jung was the main disciple of Sigmund Freud. So, you are now fifth generation from Freud, okay? My first Buddhism teacher is the student of those guys. At Princeton, by his cool, and he has this race car. All the professors at Princeton are dull and old. For some reason they hired him, he's young and handsome. And he has a sport car. This is 1975 Firebird sport car. All the girl students in love with him, all the boy students are jealous of him. He gave me a ride to the Mongol Temple from Princeton. The day after I graduated. He delivered me to my teacher physically. Then he turned around and he said, oh wait a minute, Mike, Mike, you take the car. Then I'm like, what? He says, you keep the car. Have a good life, bye. Then he got a ride home. He gave me this car. I was like, wow. Then after I saw kongxing, I really wanted to buy a diamond and offer it to the Buddha. ——— Slide 16 · Selling the car ——— [] Geshe Michael Roach: And I didn't have any money. But I have a car. So I didn't tell anybody. I went directly from the temple to the car. And I drove the car to Lakewood, New Jersey, which is the closest town. And I sold the car. It's about a $5,000 car. Nowadays it would be about $200,000 maybe. I sold it for $100. And I went and bought a diamond. ——— Slide 17 · The receipt ——— [] Geshe Michael Roach: I have the receipt. I kept the receipt. Yeah, that's the receipt. We're trying to figure out the jewelry name. It's almost ... you can read it. It's a 12 point ... this is about 12 point. I bought it for $70. I had $30 extra. And I took the diamond home. Then I sold ... that was my teacher's car also. So we don't have any car. I brought the diamond back to the ... I took a bus home. Then I walked the rest of the way. And I put the diamond on the altar behind all the Buddha's like ... And I didn't tell my teacher anything. And then, I don't know, next morning, he said, Oh, by the way, the diamond you put ... the diamond you hid on the altar, I found it. And I will offer it to my teacher. And he offered it to his teacher. His teacher wrote down liberation in the palm of your hands. So, that's where the diamond went. So, diamond is very important. You should keep a diamond. Or, if you already donated all your money in Malaysia, when you get home, you can buy some sugar. And it's the same. They are both not the real thing. You don't get more credit with the emptiness office if you have a more expensive diamond. One dollar. Eight thousand dollars. Same. In the emptiness, it's the same. This one's cheaper. This one tastes better also. Keep a diamond. Keep a diamond with you. Thank you. Host: No, I have a good news. I have a good news. I have a good news to announce. So, we had auctions today before about the higher diamonds. So, now we have two auctioneers. One's from online, one's from offline. The total number will be sixty-five thousand dollars in total with two diamonds. So, let's welcome Chen Hongqing. Take a photo. The second good news is a teacher's calligraphy. It's 8,800 US dollars. Ms. Hongqing. The calligraphy. The teacher's calligraphy. Please give it to the teacher. Thank you, Ms. Hongqing. Thank you for both of the generosities. Geshe Michael Roach: What it says. By the way, there are many kinds of calligraphy in West China. This one is called kyuk. Which is also similar to the word for lightning. It's also similar to the word for lightning. It's very similar to the word for lightning. It should be written like this. This calligraphy is from a very famous Buddha. The name of the Buddha is Peach Tree Cafe (?). Repeat after me. Kyuk means six. Qing means six. So, it means the six perfections. Thank you. Host: Thank you, Ms. Hongqing. Thank you. Thank you for teaching. We have some important announcements. Group No. 29 to Group No. 32, please prepare yourself. You will take a photo with teachers later. Thank you. Say goodbye to students online. Thank you. Thank you, Geshe Michael Roach, for another profound and inspiring teachings. Thank you, everyone, for your wholehearted presence and practice. Next, we will have two rebroadcast classes. The next one is the Class 9 of Arya's Diamond Way. We hope you have a peaceful and restful break. We now look forward to seeing you in the next rebroadcast. Thank you, everyone.
